Huntington Ravine currently has LOW avalanche danger. Natural avalanches are very unlikely and human triggered avalanches are unlikely except in isolated pockets. Normal caution is advised.
A low pressure system is moving across the Great Lakes and will bring a strong cold front to the region by early afternoon. Temperatures this morning may warm to 4C (40F) with rain and/or freezing rain moving in. The cold front should change the rain to snow by this evening with 5-7 cm (2-3") expected and gusty west winds will develop. Before this happens climbers and skiers should pay attention to the hazards associated with warm temperatures and rain. Large chunks of ice have been detached by the last few days of warm sunny weather and are looking for the right time to come crashing down.
Temperatures are expected to drop quickly this afternoon. Depending on how rapidly it drops, the new snow may or may not bond well to the surface. You may see the current avalanche danger increase quickly, especially with the west winds moving additional snow into the ravines. If you venture into the ravines pay attention to the snowfall intensity and temperatures.
The John Sherburne ski trail has variable conditions due to the recent changes in temperature and precipitation. Expect spring-like conditions this morning with areas of ice, some blowouts, abrupt water bars, open holes, and running water. By late afternoon the conditions will change again as the temperature drops.
THE LION HEAD WINTER ROUTE IS OPEN. This is a steep and challenging route. Ice axe, crampons, and the skill to use them well are necessary for safe travel. Remember, it is always easier to go up than come down.
AS ALWAYS, THIS ADVISORY IS ONE MORE TOOL TO HELP YOU MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN. It should be used along with your own snow stability assessments, knowledge of safe travel techniques, skill in reading mountain weather's effect on the snowpack, and avalanche rescue.
