Huntington Ravine currently has MODERATE and CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger. The Escape Hatch and South Gully have Moderate avalanche danger. Natural avalanches are unlikely and human triggered avalanches are possible. Unstable slabs are possible on steep terrain. Use caution in steeper terrain. All other gullies in Huntington Ravine have Considerable avalanche danger. Natural avalanches are possible and human triggered avalanches are probable. Unstable slabs are probable in steep terrain. Be increasingly cautious in steeper terrain.
The summit received 6.25 cm (2.5 in) of new snow as of midnight and has since received about another 2.5 cm (1 in). This brings the 48 hour total snowfall to 17 cm (6.7 in) with another 5 cm (2 in) expected to fall throughout today. This snow has been accompanied by strong W and WNW winds. These conditions are ideal for loading and cross-loading most slopes in Tuckerman and Huntington Ravine, especially E and ESE aspects. Areas that are posted at Considerable vary within that rating though they all fall within the parameters of Considerable. We feel that natural activity is a possibility in these areas today. Areas that are posted at Moderate may be pushing the upper end of that rating as the day progresses and loading continues. These areas are posted at Moderate because they generally have smaller snowfields and/or their aspects and topography don't favor as much loading with W and WNW winds. Keep in mind that human triggered avalanches are possible under a Moderate rating.
The John Sherburne ski trail has variable conditions due to the recent changes in temperature and precipitation. Expect variable conditions with areas of ice, some blowouts, abrupt water bars, open holes, and running water.
THE LION HEAD WINTER ROUTE IS OPEN. This is a steep and challenging route. Ice axe, crampons, and the skill to use them well are necessary for safe travel. Remember, it is always easier to go up than come down.
AS ALWAYS, THIS ADVISORY IS ONE MORE TOOL TO HELP YOU MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN. It should be used along with your own snow stability assessments, knowledge of safe travel techniques, skill in reading mountain weather's effect on the snowpack, and avalanche rescue.
