Huntington Ravine has MODERATE and LOW avalanche danger. South and O'Dell Gullies have Moderate avalanche danger. Natural avalanches are unlikely and human triggered avalanches are possible. Use caution in steeper terrain. All other forecast areas in Huntington Ravine have Low avalanche danger. Natural avalanches are very unlikely and human triggered avalanches are unlikely except in isolated pockets. Normal caution is advised.
While yesterday morning's winds transported some snow, they were not strong enough to rip up the crust and get the snow trapped underneath. The result was some new discontinuous slab development in a variety of areas. These slabs are what you need to be concerned about today. Larger slabs can be found in areas posted at Moderate and pockets can be found in areas posted at Low, like those in Yale and Central Gullies. Along with these new slabs you will encounter some old hard surface and newer snow that is encapsulated by a thin crust that formed on Monday from a period of warm weather and drizzle. This feature is helping with the overall stability of the snow in the Ravines. Folks with good route finding and stability assessment skills should find plenty of reasonable options today. Through a brief clearing in the weather yesterday, we determined that we had some natural avalanche activity in the Bowl, Sluice and probably the Lip. These avalanches probably occurred sometime on Monday. Today the fracture lines are still visible but not as obvious.
A messy weather maker is in store for us tomorrow. The forecast is calling for snow and mixed precipitation in the mountains with roughly 2-4" (5 to 10 cm) of accumulation possible. Check the latest weather and avalanche advisory before heading into avalanche terrain tomorrow. A variety of factors could lead to increasing avalanche danger, including the possibility of liquid precipitation.
The Lion Head Winter Route is open. Mountaineering skills and equipment are required for safe travel on this route.
The Sherburne Ski Trail is open and in decent shape. You should expect variable conditions as the newer snow conceals all types of buried treasure.
