Huntington Ravine has Low avalanche danger. Natural avalanches are very unlikely and human triggered avalanches are unlikely except in isolated pockets. Normal caution is advised.
It's a clear, cold, and windy morning here on Mt. Washington. We were treated to great views of both ravines this morning, showing us the effect of the strong winds on the snowpack. Some areas of Tuckerman Ravine have been hammered down to old surfaces. Much of the remaining areas are covered in newly deposited snow which has been highly windpacked. These newly deposited hard slabs have great tensile strength, which contributes to their stability. While we are at Low danger across much of the Ravine, there may be isolated pockets of instability in strong southeast aspects where the wind wasn't able to hammer down the slabs quite as well. Examples of where this may be taking place are the tops of Hillman's Highway, Left Gully, and Right Gully. More importantly, the greater Lip area, including the Sluice, has received more loading with less wind effect. Unstable slabs are possible in the Lip and Sluice. Also worth noting is that these new slabs will be sitting atop highly variable crust conditions, so although tensile strength is high in hard windpack, it is the interface between the old crust and the new snow that can act as the weak link in the chain.
Once again arctic conditions dominate the mountain today. Although visibility is better than yesterday, don't let this lull you into a false sense of safety. The cold temperatures, strong winds, and blowing snow make venturing above treeline a risky proposition. Fingers, toes, and exposed skin on faces are easily frostbitten in these conditions. If you must head up high, be sure to have good boots, mittens, multiple pairs of goggles, and face protection. These are all essential items for your safety.
The Lion Head Summer Trail is still open. The Summer Trail crosses an avalanche prone slope that has not developed as of yet. The Winter Route is not built for travel without adequate snow cover, so although we are in winter, please help keep the Winter Route in good shape by using the Summer Trail.
