All forecasted areas of Huntington Ravine have Low avalanche danger today. Natural avalanches are very unlikely and human triggered avalanches are unlikely except in isolated pockets. Normal caution is advised.
Light snow fell yesterday during the morning hours before shutting down around 11am. This gave us just a bit of new loading with SW winds effecting some NE facing aspects. Huntington remains at Low today due to it remaining unchanged over the past 24 hours. Tuckerman offers a more inconsistent yet interesting snowpack. Although it is posted at Moderate there are stable areas peppered throughout the Ravine. The newly formed slabs are just enough in most places to be more than "isolated" within the Low definition. For instance, most of the lower 2/3's of Left gully has Low avalanche danger. But the entire center and south side of the start zone has new slab. The same concept is true in some of the Chute, across the Headwall and under the Lip. Needless to say spatial variability is the topic of the day once again. New soft slab, hard-as-steel slab with good tensile strength, and large deep isolated wind ribs deposited by Wednesday night's high winds can all be found in close proximity.
An approaching low pressure bringing moisture to the mountains late this afternoon will complicate this variability. Snow is expected through the night wrapping up during the mid-morning tomorrow. Modest amounts are still anticipated with 2-4" (5-10cm) projected. Snow should load from W winds tonight before shifting out of the NW and increasing to 90mph on Saturday. Expect and elevated avalanche danger tomorrow with temperature falling to around -10F (-23C) at higher elevations. Cold air will continue to filter in overnight into Sunday bringing temperatures to -20F (-29C).
Be sure to check out our website's "Weekend Update" feature this evening for updated information about tomorrow's weather.
The Lion Head Summer Trail is still open. The Summer Trail crosses an avalanche prone slope that is still developing. We are keeping a close eye on this slope, but as always, safe travel techniques dictate traveling across this and other such slopes one at a time.
